'spot the differences' is an artistic project which employs the comunicative channels of the Fashion system: aim of the operation is to sell a product publicized through images which simulate a Fashion advertising campaign.
The images represented by several posters show models wearing white dresses differently spotted.
The various stains on the clothes embody a tendency between the consumer and the product while at the same time offering a critique as well as a parody of how much fashion is always more interested in the immateriality of a style rather than the physical presence of the objects used for the advertisement (be it dress, accessory or perfume). The motivation behind the paradoxical choice to create a collection of stains, lies in the interest towards the Fashion communicative and representative potentialities. The challenge is to reinterprete within the different media used by the fashion industry the above mentioned immateriality that creates a trend, a sign of collective and privat desires. Paola Anziche is interested in the way in which communicative codes (visual, rhetoric, etc.) manage to convince the public to adopt new and diverse lifestyles. In order to be realized as an actual project, 'spot the differences' has to run through the advertising channels, adopting the features while at the same time insisting on its ontological difference and avoiding the usual conditions of the advertising- and economical system.
How can a stain appear accidentally?
To highlight any of the stains optically means to isolate something (in our so-called “good manners’ society”) usually removed from the visual field. The spot, when analysed by its graphic components/features, is read under its form-sign. Stains are created that sit on a potential location of their origin on the clothes; they are being highlighted but at the same time become obscure by the addition of a color that is liberated from any direct associations about the origin of the stain. As a consequence, an interpretative surplus is created that leads to a much more open way of reading away from literalness.
The act of stylizing a spot and highlighting it through color that doesn’t correspond to its actual origin is the focus of 'spot the differences' .
An integral part of 'spot the differences' is to use the ways of fashion’s publishing in order to promote and sell the graphic sign of the spot, while employing photographic devices of the fashion system. The aim of the project is to reinterprete spots as recognizable signs. The stains will become testimonials of an imaginary advertising campaign to be placed inside fashion and style magazines. The aim of 'spot the differences' is to get in touch with readers and possible clients through the advertising series published within magazines and specialised publications.
