G → G: polaroid projectG → G - The Polaroid Project collaboration, started in August 2001 when Elise Gardella asked April Gertler to exchange photographs by mail. Each new image was to be shot in response to the photograph just received. They both took a polaroid, the first picture to reach the other became the first piece of the series. Over time "G to G" has taken on an unexpected dimension. This single image project is also a visual correspondence between two friends.
With the location, time, and date written on the polaroid a timeline was established chronicling the artists' movements in various cities and countries. Moreover, certain photographs depict specific moments, events, or circumstances. A birth, the new boyfriend, another apartment or the pitch of an emotion have all been documented. Even in photographs of a street scene, still-life, portrait or abstract image, the artists' lives are just under surface.
In this work the classic tradition of letter writing is transformed into a pictorial dialogue. At far distances from one another these friends make art while speaking to each other in polaroids.
